  The story of Tower Bridge really begins well before its official opening on 30 June Throughout the 19th century the growing traffic congestion in London increased the calls for an additional river crossing and finally in , a special sub-committee was set up to tackle the issue. Tower Bridge was the creation of architect Sir Horace Jones and civil engineer Sir John Wolfe Barry.
